Almost a third of people missing out on £400 energy discount vouchers

Almost a third of energy customers are missing out on a £400 discount off their bills. Only 71% of available vouchers for those on prepayment meters have been redeemed so far, the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy has said.

Last year the UK government announced the energy bills support scheme offering customers £400 off their gas and electric bills in a bid to offset soaring costs which saw energy bills almost double since last winter. Customers who pay their bills via direct debit receive the discount in monthly instalments which began last October, though each energy company runs the scheme slightly differently. You can read more about that here.

Those with prepayment meters which need to be topped up - around four million people in the UK - have been receiving the discount through redeemable vouchers. But the department says only 71% of these vouchers have been redeemed so far, meaning millions could be missing out on the discount.
