Ally McCoist reckons it's a "big ask" for Rangers to take anything from their Champions League showdown with Liverpool.
The Ibrox side are heading for Anfield on Tuesday night for a huge group stage encounter with last season's finalists. Jurgen Klopp's superstars have been largely off-colour so far this season but remain heavy favourites with Rangers almost completely written off by the bookies.
Giovanni van Bronckhorst has previous for springing big upsets in Europa as McCoist pointed to last season's stunning 4-2 Europa League win away at Borussia Dortmund. The Ibrox legend knows it'll take something similar to get any sort of result on Merseyside and hinted he feels questions around Liverpool 's defensive worries may be slightly overstated in the context of this fixture. They still have the likes of Mo Salah, Luis Diaz and Roberto Firmino for Van Bronckhorst's side to try and get a handle on, and McCoist admits it's a monumental challenge for his old club.
He told talkSPORT: “It’s a big ask. It’s a really big ask. It will need a level of performances that we did see last year against Borussia Dortmund so they are capable of it.
“But it's one of these situations where you just think, Liverpool at home, particularly on the big European nights. We are questioning them defensively, however, they’ve still got some players, I think it’s a big ask.”
