An alleged plot to murder a man with a firearm and petrol has been foiled after a tip-off to police led to an accused conspirator's arrest.

Francesco Caputi, 26, was taken into custody as a passenger during a vehicle stop in Woodbine in Sydney's southwest on Monday.

Police say he was part of a criminal group that planned to murder a 34-year-old man.

Officers commenced their investigation on December 28 after receiving information about the alleged plot.

Caputi appeared at Campbelltown Local Court on Tuesday charged with participating in a criminal group, and conspiring and agreeing to murder a person.

He did not apply for bail and will next appear before the same court on March 10.

Court documents seen by AAP accuse the Bradbury man of planning to "destroy and destruct" the target person using a firearm and petrol.

Police seized mobile phones, a balaclava and black clothing from the vehicle during the 26-year-old's arrest.

A search was conducted at a Bradbury property on Monday afternoon where officers took hold of a CCTV system, prohibited drugs and more clothing.
