Alleged grinch charged over Christmas crimewave

A man has been charged with a string of burglaries carried out as Melburnians celebrated Christmas. (HANDOUT/)

An accused car thief and burglar unleashed a one-man Christmas crime wave across Melbourne, police  allege.

The 49-year-old Altona Meadows man is facing more than 30 charges over a series of crimes that began on Christmas night.

Police will allege he broke into a design studio in inner-city Richmond about 7pm on Christmas day, then stole a vehicle from a furniture business in the same suburb a short time later.

The man drove to the city's northwest early on Boxing Day, allegedly breaking into a restaurant in Deer Park about 5.45am, then an indoor furniture business on the Western Highway in Ravenhall, and two restaurants on Westwood Drive in the same suburb.

He was arrested at a pub in St Albans at 1pm on Boxing Day.

The stolen vehicle was found in the car park and police seized items from it they say were stolen in the burglaries.

The man was charged with offences including burglary, theft and criminal damage.

He was expected to appear in Melbourne Magistrates' Court on Saturday.

ACT police meanwhile apprehended a man they allege was carrying a 3D-printed handgun at a Canberra shopping mall on Boxing Day.

The 39-year-old has been charged with the unauthorised possession of a prohibited firearm.

Australian Border Force investigators also arrested a woman at Sydney airport they allege was attempting to smuggle more than $16 million worth of amphetamines into the country in her luggage.

They say the drugs were discovered in vacuum-sealed bags labelled as "tea".
