All upcoming Game of Thrones spin-offs as House of the Dragon airs in the UK

House of the Dragon just premiered on HBO Max in the US, and now it is making its debut on Sky Atlantic in the UK.

It is set to be one of the biggest shows in years, expanding the already rich Game of Thrones (GoT) universe even further.

However, it wasn’t the first GoT spin-off to be made after the original ended, with HBO spending $30million (£25m) on a finished pilot that never saw the light of day.

Starring Nicole Kidman, it was cancelled after the pilot episode was filmed as it reportedly didn’t deliver “on the premise of the original series", according to former chairman of WarnerMedia Bob Greenblatt in an interview with Entertainment Weekly.

Even though the studio eventually settled on the Matt Smith and Emma D’Arcy starring prequel, House of the Dragon, there is so much more coming for fans to sink their teeth into.

All Game of Thrones spin-offs coming

House of the Dragon

After years of waiting and speculation, House of the Dragon is finally here.

Set around 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones, the new prequel shows audiences the Targaryen family back in their prime.

Viewers will get to see House Targaryen back when dragons darkened the skies across the known world, and the events that led to their extinction.

In the universe’s history, there was an event known as the Dance of the Dragons, which saw the fire-breathing beasts die off and become myth.

The series will also explain why the Targaryen’s are a shadow of their former selves by the time of Game of Thrones, as the once great House collapsed into civil war.

The Sea Snake

Reports first surfaced in 2021 that HBO were developing The Sea Snake, which previously had the alleged title Nine Voyages.

HBO has not confirmed the change, though George RR has opened up about the project on his blog.

He said: “We wanted to avoid having two shows with numbers in the title." (This is in relation to the next spin-off on this list).

The show looks to focus on the character of Corlys Velaryon, who is known as The Sea Snake is Westeros’ myth.

Audiences will have the chance to meet him in House of the Dragon, as the character is making a major appearance in that series.

Steve Toussaint is playing the legendary sailor, with the actor best known for Before We Die, It’s a Sin and Small Axe.

Ten Thousand Ships

Prequels seem to be the bulk of the focus for the future of Game of Thrones, as Ten Thousand Ships will take audiences back to a whopping 1,000 years before Ned Stark lost his head.

Again, this is reportedly in development, with HBO giving little away about its future plans for the franchise.

It would likely follow Princess Nymeria, an ancestor of House Martell who founded Dorne.

Entertainment Weekly did confirm that Person of Interest writer and producer, Amanda Segel, is the showrunner on the project.

Jon Snow sequel

Kit Harrington will reportedly return as Jon Snow (HBO)

Back in June, The Hollywood Reporter reported that a sequel series is in the works, focusing on Kit Harrington’s Jon Snow.

HBO is allegedly in early development on the show with no plot details revealed at this stage.

In the final season of GoT, it was confirmed that Jon’s real name was Aegon Targaryen, making him the potentially rightful hair to the Iron Throne.

However, Jon was exiled out of Westeros, with viewers last seeing him wander up north, beyond the wall, to start a new life with the Wildlings.

The Tales of Dunk and Egg

George RR’s Tales of Dunk and Egg side stories have always been fan favourites, so it is no surprise that HBO is reportedly developing to show based on them.

Another prequel, it would follow the knight Ser Duncan the Tall (Dunk) and his squire (Egg).

Egg is destined to become King Aegon V Targaryen in the future, which would mean this show bridges the gap between House of the Dragon and Game of Thrones.

The author has stated that the title is subject to change, with another potentially being The Hedge Knight.

Animated spin-offs

GoT’s expansion into animation is highly anticipated, as it would allow the series to show some massively complex sequences without the budgetary concerns.

However, little is know about this aspect of the franchise’s future, as George RR has admitted he isn’t at liberty to comment on the development.

On his Not a Blog, blog, George RR explained: "I am not allowed to talk about most of what's happening, except to say that things are moving very fast, and I love love love some of the concept art I am seeing.

"The news leaked several months ago that one of the animated shows would be set in Yi Ti. That's true.

“Our working title is The Golden Empire, and we have a great young writer on that one too, and I think the art and animation is just going to be beautiful.

“I would tell you more if I could. I don't think I can say a word about the other animated shows. Not yet."
