Drunk cooking is a leading cause of domestic kitchen fires, especially late at night.
Dublin Fire Brigade have been issuing warnings about the dangers of drunk cooking for years now, and yet it still remains one of the main reasons for late night fires. DFB have posted plenty of photos of the ‘evidence’ to highlight their warnings, with images of charred pizzas, baguettes and sausages.
“Usually the chef falls asleep waiting on their masterpiece to cook,” states one of the DFB posts, “only to be woken by a smoke alarm, woken by one of our firefighters, or not wake up at all....ever.”

Similar warnings are usually given at festive seasons such as Christmas and New Years, and around big sporting occasions, but they were also given throughout the pandemic.
Grabbing a takeaway is far safer, they say, and if you’re enjoying some drinks, why not enjoy some takeaway too? You wouldn’t even need to clean up. Deal with a headache in the morning, not a house fire, they said in a different post.
Cooking whilst tired or under the influence of certain medication also increases the chances of a cooking-related fire, they say. It also means you may not wake up to the sound of fire or smoke alarms.
