AJ Bell Leeds Triathlon road closures for 2022 as championship comes to Roundhay Park

This weekend the 2022 World Triathlon Championship series comes to Leeds.

On Saturday (June 11) participants will begin the challenging task of cycling, swimming, and running over 36.7km. For the first time, there will also be an elite mixed team relay taking place which is a welcome inclusion to the biggest celebration of triathlon in the UK.

The standard route begins with a 1.5km swim in Waterloo Lake followed by a 36.2km cycle ride through Roundhay Park and North Leeds. The ride will travel through Park Avenue, Princes Avenue, Street Lane, Scott Hall Road and Stonegate Road.

Letters have been sent to residents and businesses where a number roads will be closed. Pedestrian access will be available to properties but drivers needing to use a vehicle during the event are asked to move it before the road closes.

Those who park on the roads which will be closed are asked to find an alternative location. Any vehicles not moved are subject to being towed away.

Here are all the road closures in place for the World Triathlon Championship 2022:

  • Friday June 10 between 9am and 12.30pm Princes Avenue Park Avenue and West Avenue will be closed
  • Saturday June 11 between 5am and 6pm Princes Avenue, Park Avenue and West Avenue will be closed
  • Sunday June 12 between 4am and 6pm Princes Avenue, Park Avenue and West Avenue will be closed
  • Between 4am and 1pm a cycle route along Street Lane, Scott Hall Road and Stonegate Road, affecting Roundhay, Oakwood, Moortown and Meanwood, will be closed

Councillor Jonathon Pryor, Leeds City Council’s executive member for employment, economy, culture and education, said: "We’re looking forward to once again hosting this stand-out event in our stunning Roundhay Park.

"We’re working hard with the event organisers to ensure the weekend runs smoothly and as part of that effort there will be some road closures and changes to public transport over the weekend in the areas surrounding Roundhay Park.

"Make sure you plan ahead for any journeys in this area and, if you’re able to, make sure you come along and soak in the fantastic atmosphere of the event."
