All the cancellations and closures in Merseyside after Queen's death

The nation is in mourning following the death of Her Majesty the Queen.

The palace confirmed the Queen died peacefully at Balmoral on Thursday afternoon as her family and senior royals travelled over to be by her side. A plan known as Operation London Bridge has now been put in place, which sets out exactly what will happen in the coming days ahead of Her Majesty's funeral.

The plans will see major differences to what events are on, where we shop and even what appears on TV. Here we take a look at the closures and cancellations that are currently in place in and around Merseyside and those that are expected in the coming days.

The day of the Queen's funeral will be a Day of National Mourning, but employers will not be made to give staff the day off. There will also be church services and memorial services across the UK.

Shops will close or only be open for reduced hours, but it is up to the individual business to decide whether they stay open or allow employees time off. Banks are also expected to close on the day of the funeral.

Liverpool ONE said in a statement on Thursday: "Her Majesty The Queen Elizabeth II (1926 to 2022) The entire Liverpool ONE community is saddened by The Queen’s death and our thoughts are with The King, The Queen Consort and the Royal Family."

Pubs and restaurants

As with shops and other businesses, it is up to pubs and restaurants whether they decide to close in the coming days or on the day of the funeral.

The Elephant Pub & Bakehouse in Woolton was among the Liverpool pubs that decided to close on Thursday evening following the news of the Queen's death.

In an announcement on Facebook, the pub said: "Out of respect for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II we will be closing the pub tonight at 7:30PM. Existing reservations will be contacted directly by our team.

"We will be back open from 11:45AM tomorrow. Rest In Peace Ma’am."

The British Pub & Beer Association said on Twitter: "We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Her Majesty the Queen. Her duty to our country has been extraordinary and our condolences are with the Royal Family. In the coming days we will work with our nation's pubs & brewers to pay respect in communities across the country."

Sports

Sporting events have been postponed this Friday following Her Majesty's death. Decisions have yet to be made regarding the weekend's fixture, however it's believed postponements will not be mandatory after today.

The EFL has confirmed that its fixtures for this evening, September 9, will be postponed including Tranmere Rovers v Stockport County.

A statement issued by EFL on Thursday evening said: "As a mark of respect, following the passing of Her Majesty, The Queen Elizabeth II earlier today, the EFL has confirmed that its fixtures scheduled for tomorrow evening (Friday 9 September) – Burnley v Norwich City and Tranmere Rovers v Stockport County - have been postponed.

"A determination regarding the remainder of this weekend’s scheduled fixtures will be made following a review of the official mourning guidance, in addition to further consultation with DCMS and other sports on Friday morning."
