CHENNAI: All higher educational institutions in the state should follow 69% reservation system in admissions, higher education minister K Ponmudy said on Tuesday following opposition from political parties in the state to reserving seats under economically weaker section (EWS) quota in MSc Biotechnology programme offered at Madurai Kamaraj University.
The department of biotechnology (DBT) which is offering scholarships asked the state universities to follow the EWS quota in admissions.
“The state government’s stand was made clear to the Union government when the DBT asked Anna University to follow the EWS quota in the same course. The admission for these seats will be conducted as per the Tamil Nadu’s reservation policy,” the minister said.
The minister also said the higher education department would send a circular to all institutions, including colleges, universities and polytechnic colleges, asking them to follow the 69% reservation.
Based on the instruction from the state government, Madurai Kamaraj University vice-chancellor J Kumar also wrote to the secretary of department of biotechnology resubmitted the seat matrix for admission to the MSc Biotechnology programme without EWS quota.
“The same may be notified in your web portal and implemented as other state universities have already informed you on this issue,” he said in the letter.
