Alister Jack snubs anti-poverty summit as Tory Government record comes under scrutiny

A Tory Cabinet Minister has snubbed an anti-poverty conference called by the Scottish Government.

Scotland Secretary Alister Jack will not be attending a roundtable in Edinburgh which will focus on spiralling child poverty levels.

The Tory government has been accused by experts of contributing to poverty rising through policies like cutting Universal Credit.

The summit, which was one of the First Minister Humza Yousaf’s early commitments, will hear from charities as well as opposition leaders.

A UK Government source said Jack was only invited on Saturday morning and a senior official will be attending.

He said: “It looks like the invitation was an afterthought or not a serious offer."
