Alejandro Garnacho 'hints' at Manchester United shirt number he wants next

Alejandro Garnacho has seemingly indicated that he would like to take on the vacant number seven jersey next season.

The iconic club digit is currently free after Cristiano Ronaldo’s departure from Old Trafford in November. The superstar had originally been given special dispensation by the Premier League to take the shirt from Edison Cavani after the start of the 2021/22 season.

A catalogue of United legends have donned the No.7 including Eric Cantona, David Beckham and George Best. And it seems Garnacho has his eye on becoming the next player to be bestowed the honour.

The 18-year-old, who currently wears the number 49, liked a tweet which said: “Give Garnacho the 7 shirt.” The teenager signed a new five-year deal on Friday, securing his long-term future after a breakthrough season.

Fans are convinced the liked tweet is a hint that the player hopes to land the iconic shirt number for next season. Here's what some of them have had to say on social media:

@alfred_ayodeji9: Garnacho wants the number 7

@AJ_UTD20: Garnacho wearing no. 7 next season, you would love to see it

@TomMarks03: Garnacho has done far more already to earn it, I love Sancho but you can’t reward him with the 7 for his performances, it sends the wrong message.

@Alo2Jesufemi: Ronaldo was given the number 7 early into his career at United and he ended up being one the best to wear the shirt, even though I don't really agree with giving Garnacho now, it could work tbh

Garnacho has not played since suffering an ankle injury in March but gave fans a boost after being pictured back in team training on Friday. There is an outside chance the winger could be included in the squad for Sunday’s clash with Aston Villa.

United value him so highly that they are not allowing the young talent to represent Argentina at the Under-20 World Cup next month amid an important run-in period. It indicates that he will build on his 29 first-team appearances this season.

The youngster has netted four goals and five assists since making his full debut against FC Sheriff in October’s Europa League group stage clash. Highlights include a stoppage-time winner against Fulham in November and an assist for Marcus Rashford’s winner versus Manchester City in January.
