Alejandro Garnacho and Bruno Fernandes are both in agreement about Scott McTominay’s quality after the Manchester United star netted twice in Scotland’s historic win over Spain on Tuesday evening.
The midfielder scored one in either half to sink a sluggish Spain to a 2-0 defeat in their Euro 2024 qualifier and add to his two goals against Cyprus in Saturday’s 3-0 triumph.
It means the 26-year-old has netted as many goals in the past week as he has done in the past two seasons for United. McTominay has had to be patient for game time at Old Trafford under Erik ten Hag with a number of players ahead of him in the pecking order.

Of his 32 appearances this term, just 13 of them are starts. However, his form has noticeably improved from last season’s dismal campaign and he has popped up with key goals against Omonia in the Europa League and Aston Villa in the League Cup.
McTominay started on the bench for Scotland against Cyprus before coming on to net two late strikes. He played the whole 90 minutes in the victory over Spain and took to Instagram to sum up what was a whirlwind night.
He wrote: “What an incredible night of football,” prompting a flood of responses. Garnacho was quick to comment, offering his praises, writing: “What a player,” with a love heart-eyes emoji.
Charlie Savage, on loan at Forest Green Rovers, also sent a pair of clapping emojis. Meanwhile, Fernandes posted a photo of him watching the full-time celebrations on TV, taking to his Instagram story to write: “What a player McTerminator.”
Speaking after full-time, McTominay shared his delight at his two goals. “I like to both get in the box and sit and defend with my teammates as well,” he told Viaplay.
“I know I can add more goals and assists to my name and I think the last two games have been a good example of that." Scotland now top Group A in Euro 2024 qualifying.
