Aldi slashes price of Christmas vegetables to 19p - kicking off supermarket price war

Aldi has announced the return of its Christmas food discounts, which will see vegetables being sold for as little as 19p.

From Sunday December 18 until Saturday December 24, Aldi shoppers will benefit from the Super 6 Deals price cuts.

Included in the deal is 1kg of carrots, 2kg of white potatoes and a 500g bag of parsnips.

Also available as part of the offer will be Aldi’s red and white cabbages, brussels sprouts sold in 500g packs, and Swedes.

All of the vegetables will sell for 19p each in the week leading up to Christmas.

It comes as the supermarket was named the Which? cheapest supermarket for November, the sixth consecutive month in a row.

Julie Ashfield, managing director of buying at Aldi UK, said: “At Aldi we believe that access to fresh, high-quality food is a right, not a privilege – and Christmas dinner is no exception.

“Christmas is an expensive time for many families up and down the UK, but customers can rest assured that Aldi will always offer the very best value groceries.”

Last year, a number of supermarkets joined in to slash the price of their vegetables in the lead up to Christmas.

Like Aldi, Lidl also cut their veggie prices down to 19p, offering a similar selection of reduced vegetables - but instead of a 2kg bag of white potatoes, Lidl offered a smaller 1.5kg of mini potatoes.

The supermarket also had shallots on offer, instead of swede.

Last year, Iceland were selling their veggies for as cheap as 1p online, undercutting both budget supermarkets by 18p.

The supermarket said all of its fresh and frozen vegetables costing £1 or less will be available for just 1p when shoppers buy three packs online.

The offer applied to products such as the 880g of carrots and 660g of parsnips, normally 79p, as well as 900g of sprouts, typically £1.

At Tesco and Morrisons, carrots were given away for free in a bid to spread festive cheer and tackle food waste.

Morrisons said it would give away 10,000 “wonky” versions of the root vegetables across its almost 500 stores.

Both supermarkets gave away free carrots for children to leave out for Santa and his reindeer.
