Aldi customers brand Christmas 2022 advert 'better than M&S' with nod to caterpillar cake feud

Viewers have branded Aldi's Christmas 2022 advert as 'better than M&S' as the festive film pokes fun at the recent caterpillar cake related feud between the two supermarkets.

The 90-second advert, featuring fan favourite Kevin the Carrot, is inspired by festive classic Home Alone. It follows on from a teaser released by the supermarket earlier this month. The teaser saw Kevin being left behind as the rest of the family head off on a festive holiday to Paris.

Similar to the iconic scene from the nostalgic 90s movie, Katie shouts "Kevin" after realising he is missing and launches a bid to "find Kevin." The highly-anticipated advert picks up where the teaser left off, as Katie and the family scramble through the airport to make their flight.

She realises someone from the family is missing when the family are all seated on the plane. The advert then focuses on the beloved vegetable who is seen at home alone, with his feet up watching football on his phone, while an unknown intruder stalks across the roof.

In true Aldi fashion, the supermarket has also popped in a few comedic nods to its feud with M&S, as the game Kevin is watching is played between Cuth and Col - a reference to Aldi's 'feud' with Marks and Spencer over their Cuthbert and Colin the Caterpillar cakes respectively.

The teams are even sporting Aldi and M&S' brand colours. Decked in his warm woolly jumper, he sees an intruder at the door and panics. "Quaking in his roots, he had to make a stand. And tackle the intruder, with traps he'd carefully planned," the narrator continues.

The advert is inspired by classic Christmas film Home Alone (PA)

Taking inspiration from Home Alone's Kevin McCallister, he then swings down the hallway on some Christmas lights, slams the letterbox shut with his feet, before, finally, dropping a water balloon over the head of the intruder from a safe distance.

Kevin managed to electrocute himself on some lights before heading up the stairs and using a string to dash out of the house, expected to catapult himself to become the nose of a snowman . But he ended up managing to fall in a very different place instead.

Confused, the intruder looked on, puzzled by what was in front of him before he finally realised the identity of the intruder. For the final scene, and back in the house, Kevin apologised for stopping the Paris trip, but they remarked "at least we got to see the trifle tower", as they looked back at the festive dessert laid out on the table.

Viewers were quick to praise the advert and took to Twitter to share their thoughts, with many finding the reference to the Aldi and M&S caterpillar cake feud amusing. @OriginalNintoni said: "I bloody love this - amazing ad for an amazing cause! Well done @AldiUK, very well done! #KevinTheCarrot #AldiAmazingChristmas" as @notamused666: added: "Best Christmas one yet. Beats M&S hands down."

@brandsintheair pointed out a detail during the football scene, adding: "Aldi’s Cuthbert 1, (I’m assuming M&S) Colin 0!!! Genius!" as @JanCawte2 said: "Gets my vote for best Christmas ad!"

@OnlyAsking3 added: "The first good #Christmas advert I have seen this year. Well done @AldiUK" and @yogawoman said: "Aldi wins the Christmas ad again!! Brilliant!!," with a laughing-face emoji.

Aldi's Christmas advert will premiere at 8:30pm, Thursday, November 10, on Channel 4 during the centre break of Aldi's Next Big Thing.
