Alaska officials were able to persuade a Texas man to "rethink his plan," and not to spend the winter in a small cave he dug for himself.

On Friday, Oct. 18, village public safety officers from Eagle Village attempted to locate a man along Taylor Highway after hearing reports that he was planning on camping out in a cave he had dug himself for the winter.

A 35-year-old man was found with his vehicle near a gravel pit at mile 96 of the Taylor Highway, reported the Alaska Department of Public Safety (DPS).

Following hours of discussion, Alaska State Troopers were eventually able to convince the man to spend the winter elsewhere.

"After several hours of discussion, the individual was convinced that it was in his own best interest to rethink his plan and find a more suitable location to spend the winter," Alaska DPS wrote in their daily dispatch.

The following day, village public safety officers returned in order to perform repairs on the man's vehicle and provide him with 15 gallons of fuel for his car in order to ensure his safe return to the Tok area. He was escorted off of the Taylor Highway.
