Alan Shearer's message to Newcastle's new defender Dan Burn after classy Brighton goodbye

Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer has welcomed back Dan Burn to the club following the defender's deadline day move from Brighton.

Shearer, who like Burn, had to leave Tyneside and make it at other clubs before returning to Newcastle United will know exactly the rollercoaster of emotions Burn is going through having signed for his boyhood club.

And while their journeys were slightly different - Shearer choosing to head to Southampton as a teenager, and Burn being released by United as a youngster - both share a special honour of playing for the team they supported as a child.

Taking to social media, Shearer tweeted out: 'Welcome home, Dan.'

Shearer also applauded Brighton's classy message to Burn as the deal to Newcastle was announced with just 15 minutes or so to the deadline. The South Coast club tweeted: "Smash it at your boyhood club, Dan! Wishing you all the best."

The tweet also gained plenty of applause from supporters.

Burn had joined Brighton in 2018 having worked his way up the divisions - playing for his hometown club Blyth, and then Darlington along the way.

Speaking about his return to Newcastle, he said: "I'm buzzing to be here. I never thought I'd be in this position so to be a Newcastle player and to be around St. James' Park, it's something I've dreamt of since I was a kid.

"I can't wait to step out in the shirt and to see what it feels like. From sitting in the East Stand as a kid to now, it's crazy. I'm excited to get started."
