Alan Carr's marriage failed to recover after his husband, who is an alcoholic, shared of a photo of his black eye and claimed it happened after a row, it has been reported.
The 45-year-old comedian and husband Paul Drayton announced that they were splitting "jointly and amicably" earlier today after 13 years of marriage.
However, it has now been suggested that their relationship struggled to recover after Paul shared a post on Instagram in April last year.
The photo, which showed Paul sporting a black eye, was captioned: "we had a row".
A source told the MailOnline : "Alan knew Paul's claim was potentially career threatening and could have had disastrous consequences.
"They managed to correct the situation, leaving Alan's reputation intact, but it could have been so much worse and the final straw in a line of issues."
They added that Alan has been leaning on Adele for support, as he was for her during her split from Simon Konecki.
Paul had removed the photo of himself with the black eye after an hour and confirmed the next day via a statement that "Alan would not and has never hit" him.
Alan said that he had been in Wales at the time of the incident and said that the injury was a result of Paul "being back on the wagon".
The Mirror has contacted Alan's reps for comment.
In a statement to the PA news agency, a spokesperson for the couple said: "After 13 years as a couple and three years of marriage, Alan Carr and Paul Drayton would like to announce they are separating.
"They have jointly and amicably made the difficult decision to divorce and go their separate ways.
"We request that their privacy is respected at this sensitive time."
Paul and Alan tied the knot back in 2018 after 10 years together as a couple - with the Chatty Man's pal Adele heavily involved in the nuptials.
The pair married in Los Angeles, with a spokesperson for Alan saying at the time: "Alan Carr married his long-term partner Paul Drayton at a small private ceremony in LA last week.
"The couple are currently on honeymoon in Mexico and are planning a big celebration with all their family and friends back in the UK later this summer. They are both extremely happy."
Last month, it was revealed that Paul was set to have holes drilled in his skull as he underwent a life-saving operation.
The 50-year-old took to Instagram in December to reveal details of the emergency surgery, and told his followers he would be ‘offline for a while’ as he recovers.
