AI's Biggest Companies Are Calling For A Slowdown. Musk Suggests Rivals Test Each Other's Models.

AI developers already put their models through internal evaluations designed to identify potentially dangerous capabilities or behavior. Musk's proposal would add another layer by allowing rival companies to apply their own testing systems to competitors' models. (Credit: AFP)

Elon Musk wants the world's biggest artificial intelligence companies to test each others' models before they are released as part of measures designed to pace the development of frontier models and address the technology's potential dangers.

Musk said xAI, OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Meta and "three or four" leading Chinese AI companies should allow competitors to run their own safety tests on each other's models, giving outside developers a chance to identify potentially dangerous behavior before the systems reach users.
