Artificial intelligence remains a major factor behind US layoffs, but the latest figures suggest the workforce story is not simply about machines replacing people.

Employers announced 52,881 job cuts in August, with AI cited in 3,462 cases, while restructuring accounted for 16,173 cuts and became the month's leading stated reason.
