GUWAHATI: Chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday said all efforts will be undertaken by the state government to transform Habung, the erstwhile capital of the Ahoms in upper Assam’s Dhemaji district, into a grand tourist destination.
Habung, the second capital of the founder of Ahom dynasty Swargadeo Siu-Ka-Pha, would be preserved and developed along with other important places of Ahom rule such as Tipam and Charaideo and made centres of tourist attraction, he announced.
Sarma attended the Me-Dam-Me-Phi programme organised centrally at Habung by the state cultural affairs department and Habung development management committee. He took part in the ritual of offering prayers to the ancestors and also inaugurated the Habung Chao-Chen-Ren and Holung Ho-Phi building constructed with funds provided by the state government.
Sarma also spoke about a slew of measures to be taken for Habung’s development, including construction of a guest house by the PWD near the Ho-Phi building, setting up of an ethnic village at Habung to showcase the traditions, customs, cuisine and attires of various ethnic communities among others.
He also called on the All Tai Ahom Students’ Union (ATASU) to take the initiative for setting up an international level auditorium and a Tai Ahom museum. Sarma directed education minister and Dhemaji MLA Ranoj Pegu to submit proposals for development of all roads connecting Habung, while announcing that boundary wall and ‘toran’ of Habung Chao-Chen-Ren ground would also be built soon.
