Afternoon Update: Biden condemns political violence; CFMEU in hot water over alleged criminal links; and King Charles to visit Australia in October

Afternoon. The US president, Joe Biden, has warned against making politics a “killing field” and urged Americans to reject “extremism and fury”, as the FBI continues to search for a motive in the assassination attempt on Donald Trump.

Authorities named the suspected gunman as Thomas Matthew Crooks, 20, and said he is believed to have acted alone. Here’s what we know about the Crooks so far.

  • Victorian branch of the CFMEU placed into administration | The Victorian premier, Jacinta Allan, is seeking to suspend the CFMEU’s construction division from the Victorian Labor party over allegations of criminal links. It comes after the CFMEU’s national executive announced it would assume all senior executive powers of its Victorian branch.

Kostakidis, who has been a vocal critic of the Israeli government over the Gaza war, said she was “pretty pissed off” about the complaint and indicated she would fight the case.

  • Greyhound Racing NSW in spotlight over animal welfare issues | The author of an explosive report that triggered an inquiry into greyhound racing in New South Wales warns the state government’s response could allow the industry to continue operating on a “business as usual” basis. The NSW premier, Chris Minns, last week ruled out imposing a ban on greyhound racing.

  • China’s leaders to discuss kickstarting sluggish economy | Top Chinese officials are gathering in Beijing, with all eyes on how they might spur currently lacklustre growth at a key political meeting that has historically seen officials unveil big-picture economic policy changes. The world’s second-largest economy is grappling with a real estate debt crisis, weakening consumption, an ageing population and geopolitical tensions.

  • Labor proposal targeting corporate climate responsibility criticised | The climate plans of Australian companies would be immune to private litigation for three years under an Albanese government proposal before parliament. The grace period is included in legislation before the Senate that would expand the information companies must provide about the risk the climate crisis poses to their business and what they will do about it.

  • Lost area of Welsh rainforest to be returned to ancient glory | The 59-hectare (146-acre) site in Pembrokeshire, which is now grazed by sheep, will be planted with a range of species and reconnect to its Celtic-era past.

  • King Charles to visit Australia in October | King Charles and Queen Camilla have locked in plans to visit Australia and Samoa but have called off a proposed trip to New Zealand on health advice as the king recovers from cancer.
