After Supreme Court relief, Somya Gurjar takes charge as mayor of JMC-Greater

JAIPUR: After nearly a gap of seven months, Somya Gurjar rejoined as mayor of JMC-Greater on Wednesday after the Supreme Court stayed her suspension on Tuesday.

To avoid conflict or protest from the opposition, there was heavy deployment of police personnel at the JMC headquarters.

After joining, Gurjar thanked the Supreme Court and announced that she would take up all development works which were pending in her absence. “A meeting of councillors will be called soon to pursue all development works. We will work as a team to address civic-related issues of residents,” she said.

The state government had suspended Gurjar from the mayor post and three others councillors after they allegedly assaulted JMC commissioner Yagyamitra Singh Deo on June 6, 2021.

Following the suspension, the state government appointed Sheel Dhabhai as the new mayor.

On Monday, the state government extended Dhabhai's appointment for 60 days. Dhabhai and her supporters were not present when Gurjar rejoined office. Jaipur BJP president Raghav Sharma claimed that all party councillors will work as a team for the city’s development.

After suspension, the state government had also started a judicial inquiry into the matter. The suspension decision of the government was challenged by Gurjar in the Rajasthan High Court, but the court refused to interfere. “The apex court has directed that Gurjar can join office, even if the inquiry is going on,” an official source said.

Commissioner Yagyamitra Singh had alleged that Gurjar and four councillors misbehaved and assaulted him in the mayor;s chamber after calling him for a meeting on June 4, 2021. An FIR was lodged at Jyoti Nagar police station against the mayor and the four councillors.
