Advice has been issued for Irish passport holders who might be considering travelling across the pond to make sure that a number of issues are taken care of.

Ireland has got some strong ties with the USA, further highlighted by President Joe Biden’s visit this week to mark the anniversary of the Good Friday Agreement.

For those planning on heading over to the USA however, there are a few things that need to be in order before entering the country. Here are the top things you need to know when visiting the US.

As Ireland is a Visa Waiver Program country, this means that holidaymakers must obtain approval through the ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorisation) before they travel to the US.

Furthermore, US Customs and Border Protection have advised that real-time approvals will no longer be available.

According to Aer Lingus, if a traveller arrives at the airport without a previously approved ESTA then it is likely they will be denied boarding.

If you are applying you must apply no later than 72 hours before your departure date.

There is a $21.00 charge per person to avail of this service which is collected by the US Department of Homeland Security.

People can apply for authorisation using the ESTA website. Those currently not in possession of a visitor's visa who intend to stay in the States for 90 days or less for business or pleasure will only need a valid passport and to fill out some personal details such as an email address and emergency point of contact.

Another thing Irish tourists need to keep an eye on is their passport validity. Visitors must make sure their passport is valid up to their return travel date.
