Actor who stars in Netflix's Top Boy defends himself after being hammered online

London YouTuber and musician Amar Koomz has taken to Twitter to defend his first acting performance after receiving brutal criticism online from fans of the Netflix show Top Boy.

The series is set on the fictional Summerhouse estate in Hackney, London and revolves around the fictional drug gang and it’s leaders.

Top Boy was originally on Channel 4 but was cancelled after 2 seasons. It wasn't until Drake became a fan that led to its revival and Netflix became the show's new home.

Who is Amar Koomz?

Amar Kumar better known by his stage name ‘Koomz’, is a 22 year old British singer-songwriter, rapper and YouTuber from Brixton.

His music video for his song "Mariah" surpassed 10 million views on YouTube.

Amar launched his YouTube channel in 2016 and first focused on interviews, pranks and challenges.

In an interview with BBC, he spoke about his hit song ‘Mariah’, and his future plans.

The budding creative said: “I came from B16, a normal college guy, I thought I wanna get a part-time job because I want to do YouTube, I need money, so I worked in McDonald's, I worked for three months then had enough money to buy a DSLR camera.”

He shared that he left McDonald’s and started filming content for YouTube.

The Brixton native said: “The revenue started coming from YouTube, I didn’t know too much about record labels and stuff, just did it for passion.”

After putting out his song Mariah, he began to get emails from A&R’s.

He initially thought the emails were from trolls or fake accounts, he showed his friends who reassured him the contacts were legit from Sony.

“Relentless were the first record label to email me”, he said.

Following the release, he amassed over 2 million views on Spotify, which opened the door to more views and radio play.

Amar is of Bangladeshi descent and described being Asian in the industry as a hard game.

He stated, “You wouldn’t hear a lot of Asian artists coming up in the UK scene.”
