Activists hold meeting at lawyer’s office in Ahmedabad

AHMEDABAD: Members of the People’s Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL) and Ahmedabad Civil Society had to change their venue twice to hold a meeting on Monday evening to express solidarity with the recently arrested social activist Teesta Setalvad, former DGP R B Sreekumar and former IPS officer Sanjiv Bhatt.

The activists had planned to organize a meeting to express their solidarity with the social activist and the former cops at Hotel Aram Orchard in Paldi. But the venue was denied and the meeting was moved to another hotel, where the activists faced another rejection. This led the activists to hold their meeting at the scheduled time at the office of Gujarat high court advocate Anand Yagnik, on Drive-In Cinema Road.

“I offered them the venue, but they were insisting on another venue. After they were not allowed to hold the meeting at two hotels in Paldi area, the meeting was held at my office. There were more than 25 people who participated in the meeting,” Yagnik said.

The lawyer also organized at his office a talk by senior advocate of the Supreme Court, Kamini Jaiswal, on the judgment delivered by the apex court rejecting the objection petition of Zakia Jafri against the summary report filed by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) in 2012 on the accusations of a larger conspiracy behind the 2002 riots against the then chief minister Narendra Modi and 62 others.
