The ACT and South Australian governments would work together to encourage low-cost flights between Canberra and Adelaide if ACT Labor is re-elected.
Chief Minister Andrew Barr said the effort would focus on encouraging Jetstar to establish services between the two cities.
"It's a relatively short flight between Canberra and Adelaide. That is the most feasible way to get to South Australia. The drive is very long," Mr Barr said.
"So we think a focus on aviation is the best way to increase two-way tourism between the ACT and South Australia."
Mr Barr said the two governments were looking for a daily service that operated several times a week.
"We do recognise that low cost carriers particularly drive a segment of the market that we wouldn't otherwise get," he said.
"And we think there's potential for there to be more tourism between Canberra and Adelaide given the relative share of market at the moment versus their population."
South Australian Premier Peter Malinauskas said he was excited to work with Mr Barr to get low-cost flights between Adelaide and Canberra.
"Every family should have an opportunity to be able to travel to our nation's capital, but also for Canberrans to enjoy everything that South Australia has to offer," Mr Malinauskas said in a statement released by ACT Labor.
Mr Barr said the ACT government would not underwrite the flights, but government commitments to multi-year tourism marketing campaigns had given airlines the confidence to commence services in the past.
"People were skeptical that Jetstar would ever come to Canberra. They are now well established and are looking to expand their network," he said at Canberra Airport on Thursday.
ACT Labor said in an earlier statement that the government's investment in an aviation stimulus fund over the last four years meant Canberra was now connected to 14 destinations.
"We have set an ambitious target to grow our visitor economy to $5 billion by 2030, and we know that making it cheaper and easier to get to Canberra will be essential to hit this target," the party said.
"Growing our visitor economy means more money is being spent in local businesses, particularly hospitality and retail, and creating local jobs."
