Aberdeen star has contract terminated after a 'difficult' time with injuries

Former Hamilton Accies defender Michael Devlin has had his Aberdeen contract terminated with immediate effect.

The 28-year-old was to leave Pittodrie this summer at the end of his contract, following a four-year injury nightmare, but Aberdeen have reported that he has left the club today.

Aberdeen said on social media this evening: "Defender Michael Devlin will leave the club having had his contract terminated.

"Everyone at Pittodrie would like to wish Michael all the very best for the future."

Earlier today it had been reported that boss Jim Goodwin had spoken to Devlin, who moved back to the Pittodrie club in 2018 having spent eight years at Accies, after being at the Dons as a youth.

But the Motherwell man's time in the Granite City had been blighted by injury, and Goodwin says that had taken its toll.

Devlin hasn't played for Aberdeen since drawing 1-1 with St Mirren on December 5, 2020, and March of that same year was the last time he featured in two consecutive games.

Goodwin, who also played for Hamilton Accies in the 2010-11 season, said: "It has been a very difficult time for Mikey, so we're giving him a little bit of time with his family just to get his head right.

"But I've had that conversation with Mikey, with regards to next season, and Mikey will be moving on from Aberdeen in the summer.

"We have had a very honest conversation. I've known Mikey a long time, he's a great kid who unfortunately probably didn't fulfil his potential due to recurring injuries, which is a great shame for him."
