Aberdeen exit explained as star opens up on injury nightmare that has ended Pittodrie stint

Former Hamilton defender Mikey Devlin is relieved his spell at Aberdeen is over - but he's now desperate for someone to take a chance on him.

The centre-back was released by the Dons earlier this month after just one Premiership appearance over two seasons due to injury problems.

A range of issues from his hamstring to his ankle have put paid to his progress that at one point had him involved in the Scotland squad.

Hailing from Motherwell, the 28-year-old has moved back to Lanarkshire as he continues his rehabilitation from his latest fitness concern.

Devlin spent seven years at Accies before departing in 2018, playing just 10 minutes of league football since late 2020. Making just 51 appearances over his time at Pittodrie, he is now looking to the future.

The defender told the Scottish Sun : “I knew the writing was on the wall at Aberdeen but leaving was still a mix of emotions.

“There was sadness and a feeling I didn’t fulfil my potential. There’s a bit of regret but also a bit of relief it’s over with.

“It was an accumulation of things. I had a hamstring injury at the start of Derek McInnes’ last season. A couple of weeks after getting back, I blocked a shot in training and needed an op on my ankle.

“The surgeon said I’d be out for nine weeks but it turned into 13 months. There were complications and more surgery.

“Unfortunately, I couldn’t quite get there. They had to make a decision and it was amicable. We felt the best thing was to part ways now and it would be better mentally to come home to Hamilton to get to where I want to be.

"I’ve been working with someone to get fit and it’s going brilliantly."
