KOLKATA: A homemaker from Dum Dum’s Gorabazar — who was allegedly abducted and confined in a mental asylum in Haridevpur by her husband on July 13 — was rescued by the neighbours on Tuesday afternoon.
After being freed, the woman, Sujata Mitra, lodged an FIR against her husband Inder Sharma, alleging that the accused had conspired to grab her property. Cops have detained the accused.
According to Mitra, Sharma plotted her fake mental illness and got a doctor’s certificate issued in her name after taking a mentally ill person to the physician and introducing her as Mitra. After this, the accused got Mitra abducted by four persons who claimed to be policemen. She was then admitted to a mental asylum in Haridevpur. Cops are looking for the mentally ill woman who may also have been kept in a hideout as well.
Sharma, a resident of Gorabazar and owner of a fast food stall, had married Mitra from the same neighbourhood in 2007 after a brief romance. The couple has a son and a daughter.
“When the victim was a child, she was adopted by a couple. After their death, she inherited their property worth a few crores. It comprised 25 cottah land and a flat. But after marriage, her husband used to torture her physically, demanding the entire property be transferred to him,” said Moli Basu Aikat, a neighbour.
Unable to bear the torture, the woman had lodged an FIR (498) against her husband with Dum Dum police station. Aikat and other neighbours had also stepped forward to provide legal assistance to the homemaker who had subsequently started living separately in her flat and had filed for divorce in a Barrackpore court. She also took a job in a tailoring shop.
Meanwhile, when neighbours learnt she had gone missing, they suspected something was wrong and sought help from Dum Dum Municipality chairman, Harinder Singh. “The neighbours came to me and narrated her entire ordeal. We asked police to take a stern action,” Singh said.
