A24's upcoming Texas Chainsaw Massacre movie made me roll my eyes — until I found out who's directing it

Texas Chainsaw Massacre on Netflix.
  • A24's upcoming Texas Chainsaw Massacre movie will be directed by Curry Barker
  • Barker recently directed the critically-acclaimed horror movie Obsession
  • The movie is being developed alongside the upcoming Texas Chainsaw Massacre TV series

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchise has come a long way since 1974, with sequels and reboots of varying quality. I was initially on the fence about A24's upcoming movie, but news of its director has made me change my mind.

According to an exclusive report by Variety, Curry Barker will be directing the latest Texas Chainsaw Massacre movie. If you're not familiar with Barker's work, he's recently dominated the horror scene with his new movie, Obsession, inspired by the Monkey's Paw concept of wishes coming with a sinister price.

In his critically-acclaimed feature, we follow a man who buys a supernatural toy and wishes for his childhood friend to fall in love with him. Naturally, this isn't a fairytale ending, and things turn dark really fast.

What should we expect from the new Texas Chainsaw adaptation?

With nine movies already in the Texas Chainsaw canon, it does sound like a reimagining is the right way to go. Barker is an incredibly creative director, with his debut being an $800 found footage movie called Milk & Serial, which was released on YouTube, to a very positive critical response.

According to insiders, Barker's Texas Chainsaw movie will be a “reimagining” of the 1974 horror classic. We don't know much yet, though, as his story around Leatherface and his victims is still under wraps.

The film is being developed alongside a Texas Chainsaw TV series from Glen Powell and Dan Cohen, and director JT Mollner, which I recently voiced my apprehension about.

Keeping all of this in mind, it does seem like Barker is a great choice to adapt the franchise for a modern audience. We don't have any plot details or teasers to judge yet, but initial reports are promising indeed.

I'm feeling optimistic about a new era of Leatherface, something I didn't expect to say after we've had so many movies already.
