A24 has dropped a tense trailer for the Backrooms movie adaptation — and I think it's perfect

An off-yellow hallway with a strange looking creature lurking in the distance.

  • A24's Backrooms movie has a new teaser trailer
  • The movie arrives in theaters on May 29
  • Backrooms is based on the Creepypasta of the same name, with a focus on strange, liminal spaces

Backrooms is the next A24 horror movie joining the production company's impressive repertoire, and I'm already thrilled with how good it looks. A brief teaser trailer has been released ahead of its May 29 release.

There are plenty of exciting new movies arriving this year, and among them are some great horror offerings. I was recently impressed by Neon's first trailer for Exit 8, which sees a man trapped in a subway station mirroring the liminal horror of Backrooms.

I'm very excited to see more of this intriguing horror universe explored, especially since Kane Parsons is directing, and I'm already a huge fan of his Backrooms web series.

Check out the eerie teaser for Backrooms below.

A24's new movie has perfectly captured the creepy atmosphere of The Backrooms

If you spend a lot of time reading weird, creepy internet lore like me, you'll know how significant "The Backrooms" concept is. It's spawned plenty of threads, podcasts, and even video games, with my favorite being the horror walking simulator POOLS.

For me, it's the uncertainty of The Backrooms that makes it so compelling. You never quite know what's around the corner, or what might be following you as you try to navigate these liminal spaces. They can be seemingly ordinary things like office blocks or shopping malls, but abandoned and not quite right. The idea of them is that you've clipped out of reality into a strange dimension that feels like our reality, but is anything but.

Right now, we know it follows a therapist's patient who goes missing into a dimension and stars Doctor Strange actor Chiwetel Ejiofor alongside Mark Duplass, known for his work on the found-footage horror Creep.

The mundane has never been so scary, and our first look at Backrooms has made me feel really optimistic about the upcoming movie. I just hope it lives up to the hype.
