Ready for another Twilight era? It’s been over a decade since the vampire phenomenon wrapped its five-movie saga starring Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson, it’s time for the franchise to come out of hiding, huh? And according to a new report, a Twilight TV series is now among upcoming book adaptations in early development at Lionsgate Television following the studio recently nabbing the rights to Stephanie Meyer’s best-selling book series.
Stephanie Meyer is apparently involved in the adaptation of this new Twilight project in development at Lionsgate, per The Hollywood Reporter. But Twi-hards, we’ll have to be patient. This project is in its very early days at the studio and does not yet have a writer, producers, network or streaming service officially behind it. Let the Team Edward/Jacob discussions return!
The current order of business for this Twilight project is finding the right writer to head the TV series. Considering the success story of the franchise across its film saga from 2008 to 2012, we’re confident Bella Swan’s story will find a way to be retold in the years to come. The films made over $3.4 billion at the worldwide box office along with the book series having sold more than 160 million copies worldwide.
With details thin on this Twilight saga, it’s likely not even been determined the angle to which it would take. I’d imagine it would be an adaptation of the four Twilight books since there is so much material there that the movies didn’t have time to get to or changed from the Stephanie Meyer novels. A Twilight TV series would have more time to explore the various characters the universe Meyer created, with room for spinoffs to be produced as well. Plus, perhaps update some elements of its protagonist for this generation’s teens following criticism about Bella Swan?
Of course the question that will float around is if the original Twilight cast members may jump aboard. These days, I’d imagine mega stars like Kristen Stewart (who is getting ready to direct her first feature) and Robert Pattinson (who is literally Batman now, and filming the sequel later this year) may turn over their famed roles to new faces. Afterall, whoever stars in the series will have to play immortal teenagers for years upon end. I wouldn’t count out Taylor Lautner, who shared last year that he “would never say no” to returning to the Twilight realm.
Speaking as a Twilight fan myself, I’d like to see different actors take on the roles and the franchise try some different things with its material than we’ve already seen with the Twilight films. It’s fun to think about a new generation of young people getting the puff paint out and making Team Edward and Team Jacob t-shirts, but that could very well be upon us with this exciting news in mind.
