"A parent's worst nightmare": Mum found out her 14-year-old daughter had died when she drove past police scene

The mum of a girl who was knocked down and killed by a street racer near Wigan only discovered that her daughter had died when she saw the police scene on her way home from work.

Courtney Ellis, 14, died instantly after being struck by a car being driven around the streets of St Helens and Haydock at high speed by Brandon Turton, who had been racing in convoy with another vehicle, the Liverpool Echo reports. As Turton was sentenced to six years and nine months in jail, Courtney's mum described the devastating moment she realised that her daughter had been involved in the fatal collision.

Speaking to the killer at Liverpool Crown Court, Angela Burke said: "The night that you killed my 14-year-old daughter was the most horrific experience I have ever had to go through. It was truly a parent's worst nightmare.
