A level 2022 grade boundaries for OCR, Edexcel, AQA and WJEC exam boards

Students all across the country will be receiving their A level results today after the first full exam season in two years.

Due to the fallout from the coronavirus pandemic, examiners were advised this year to grade papers more leniently than in pre-pandemic years. This is to compensate for the disruption to many pupils' learning.

Because of this, grade boundaries may be more relaxed across the board, with many papers requiring a lower score than usual to meet specific grades. Ofqual chief regulator Dr Jo Saxton said: "Our grading approach will recognise the disruption experienced by students taking exams in 2022. It will provide a safety net for those who might otherwise just miss out on a higher grade, while taking a step back to normal.”

According to Ofqual, grade boundaries will be roughly set between 2019 pre-pandemic levels and the boundaries set in 2021 when teacher assessment was used to mark grades.

Similarly, AQA said: "Grade boundaries show the minimum number of marks you need for each grade, and are published on results day. Once all exam papers have been marked, grade boundaries are set by senior examiners and assessment experts.

"It’s not until after all the marking has been completed that it’s possible to see how difficult students found the paper (for example, compared to previous years) and so take this into account when setting the boundaries. This means that a student who performed at a certain level should get the same grade regardless of which year they sat the exam."

A level result grade boundaries used to be released 24 hours before results day itself, but this was stopped in a bid to reduce students' stress. Now, they are released on the same day as results. Each exam board will publish its grade boundaries in the morning.

The grade boundaries will enable students to see the minimum number of marks they need to have achieved for each grade. Here's where and when you can find all the grade boundaries for your relevant exam board.
