A leading speech therapist wants to demystify stammering this International Stammering Day.
Kath Frazer - an NHS consultant speech and language therapist at Northumbria Healthcare - said that in more than four decades on the job she had seen attitudes change dramatically, but that it remained vital to destigmatise having a stammer, saying: "That's just the way someone speaks."
Speaking to ChronicleLive, she said it was vital that the public didn't laugh at those who stammer, or treat it as something to be fixed. And she said media depictions needed to improve so as not to perpetuate harmful messages. Speaking as an "ally" Kath said she wanted to ensure the stammering community was front and centre.
