A 9-year-old girl in the Philippines raised money to help one of the world's rarest birds; the child became an unlikely conservation campaigner

A nine-year-old girl named Gail Lim from Cebu City in Philippines has turned her love for wildlife into a meaningful conservation campaign, raising 20,000 Philippine pesos for the critically endangered ‘Cebu flowerpecker.’ She became interested in the tiny bird after learning that it is found only in Cebu and is among the world’s rarest birds. Rather than simply learning about its plight, she decided to do something to help. Gail organised art workshops, sold handmade crocheted animals and spoke to others about the importance of protecting the species. Her fundraising eventually allowed her to donate PHP20,000 to forest wardens working to protect the forests of Nugas in Alcoy(Cebu), one of the remaining habitats of the Cebu flowerpecker. Her story has also drawn attention from conservation organisations, showing how one child’s concern for a little-known bird can encourage others to care about its survival.
