84-Year-Old Returns Library Magazine 130 Years Overdue — Just in Time to Dodge $12,055 Fine

An 84-year-old New Hampshire man has returned a magazine to the Concord Public Library more than 130 years after it was due. John Hanson said the magazine had remained on his bookshelf for decades, although he does not know how it came into his possession.

The magazine was reported to be 48,220 days overdue. Under the library's former fine schedule, that could have translated into a theoretical $12,055 penalty, but the fee freeze meant Hanson paid nothing.
