Patrick Ewing is out at Georgetown, and Hoyas fans are probably the happiest.
The legendary Basketball Hall of Famer didn’t have that on-court skill translate to coaching — the Hoyas went 75-109 with him at the helm, including just seven wins this year and six in 2021-22. Yikes. It was time for a change.
So who could be next? Of course college hoops Twitter was all over the news, speculating on who should be hired next by the program. We put together a few of the candidates floating by fans, starting with the one name I saw repeated a lot.
Here we go:
1
Rick Pitino
If Georgetown President Jack DeGioia is standing in the way of Rick Pitino becoming the next head coach of the Hoyas, then the Board of Directors' next move is a simple one: remove Jack DeGioia.

Rick Pitino chants overheard at the Garden while Patrick Ewing's Georgetown was getting knocked out of the Big East tournament. Pitino's name has come up in rumors should Ewing, as expected, no longer be the Hoyas coach pic.twitter.com/kWAdH2ahVp

The Iona coach could look for another big job.
2
Jay Williams
This according to … Jay Williams.

3
Mike Brey
Georgetown needs to call up Mike Brey and have him name his price. Georgetown needs to hire from outside the program and get an established coach.

Mike Brey to Georgetown feels so right.

Ed Cooley

Wouldn’t say a “lock” yet, but there is a lot of buzz out there for Cooley to Georgetown right now. https://t.co/Hc2J5DrsSB

(ignore our last tweet) We've always loved and respected Ed Cooley and wish him nothing but the best at Georgetown https://t.co/uApVrbq13s

The Providence head coach is an intriguing one.
5
Kenneth Blakeney
I hope Georgetown looks at Howard Head Coach Kenneth Blakeney. He has turned a dormant program into a MEAC power. Played at Duke and is from Washington DC.
— Darren M. Haynes (@DarrenMHaynes) March 9, 2023
If I'm Georgetown, and I part ways with Patrick Ewing, I think really hard about trying to pry Kenny Blakeney away from Howard.

6
Ron Hunter
Ron Hunter would be a really good under-the-radar hire for Georgetown
— Tate Frazier (@tatefrazier) March 9, 2023
If I'm Georgetown, the first, second, third and fourth calls I make are to Ron Hunter. https://t.co/OHUUubpu5Z
— Jerry Beach (@JerryBeach73) March 10, 2023
7
Allen Iverson
Allen Iverson to Georgetown please
— Ray (@godaytonflyers) March 9, 2023
Georgetown should bring in Allen Iverson as its next coach. https://t.co/Kpt8wY7S69

I would LOVE to see this.
8
Dawn Staley
Georgetown needs a splash hire. Hoyas should think outside the box. Why not…Dawn Staley. Yes she has the better job now but if she wins another chip at SC, she might be up for the challenge. A historic and timely hire that makes G’town relevant again.
— ColvinU (@CUintheDMV) March 10, 2023
Georgetown needs to break the system and go hire Dawn Staley / Becky Hammon / someone not on an obvious list.

YES!!!!
