At 73, Mark Strauss set himself a daunting challenge: cycle 3,200 miles from the Pacific to the Atlantic and raise $1 million for children facing hunger. The California cyclist completed the journey in 69 days, travelling across the country while meeting people who supported his cause along the way. His ride has now raised $740,000 for No Kid Hungry, leaving $260,000 to reach the campaign’s goal, according to the ride’s official website. Strauss’s journey was not simply about distance or endurance. As No Kid Hungry’s account of the ride explains, he was motivated by the reality that millions of children in the United States struggle to access food. For him, the cause was simple: children need food to learn, grow and reach their potential.
