Old School RuneScape history has, once again, been written by its players. In June 2020, a now-deleted Reddit account made a simple proposition: combine two pairs of in-game shoes, the Holy Sandals and Mole Slippers, to create the Holy Moleys, a frankly unassailable bit of footwear. Others have since taken the mantle, most especially user Cptn_Honda, better known as "The Holy Moleys Guy" on the OSRS subreddit.
"I am once again asking for your support on Holy Moleys," Cptn_Honda said in 2023.
"Jagex hire this man," users said of a 2022 Holy Moley pitch from yet another supporter.
"Not sure if this is intentional but there are actually star-nosed moles. This is genuinely genius," observed another, likening the nose on the slippers to the holy star of the RuneScape god Saradomin.
At long last, their efforts have paid off. OSRS developer Jagex has finally proposed its own official take on the Holy Moleys.
In a January blog post covering changes to "getting around" the game, Jagex reveals the Holy Moleys alongside potential changes to Devout Boots that would allow players to dismantle them back into Holy Sandals that could then be combined with Mole Slippers. "We agree. It's time," Jagex writes.
There's been heated debate over whether the Holy Moleys are visually based on, and should practically use, the sandals or the boots. A very serious game, OSRS.
Due to the way most OSRS updates work, the Holy Moleys and many other additions and changes will be put to a player vote through an in-game polling system. This particular blog post just offered an updated look on an incoming poll. But the star of the show was clear. The Holy Moleys must pass the vote (even if it would be very funny if they didn't).
A reply to one celebratory post sums it up: "We did it Reddit!"
