Wet Bathroom Floors
The bathroom is where most falls happen. Indian bathrooms are designed for bucket baths, water everywhere, floors that stay wet for an hour after use, and no grip strips anywhere near the squat area or the commode. For an elderly parent whose balance has quietly shifted over the years, a wet marble or ceramic tile floor is the single most dangerous surface in the house. The WHO estimates that adults over 65 have roughly a 30% chance of falling in any given year, and bathroom falls account for a disproportionate share of the fractures that follow. A non-slip mat that suctions to the floor and a grab bar fixed to the wall next to the commode reduce that risk substantially. The mat must be checked monthly, suction fails on older tiles.
