What Tinnitus Actually Is
Tinnitus is not a disease. It is a symptom, the perception of sound when no external sound exists. Most people picture it as a consequence of loud concerts or ageing ears, and sometimes it is. But a significant portion of tinnitus cases arrive through mechanisms that have nothing to do with cochlear hair cell damage. That distinction matters because the intervention that helps one cause does nothing for another.
