6.6-magnitude earthquake strikes central Peru

An earthquake of magnitude 6.6 struck central Peru on Thursday, news agency Reuters reported citing the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) said.

The quake occurred at a depth of 10 km (6.21 miles), according to GFZ.

There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage.

The tremor was felt across parts of southern Peru, including the regions of Ica and Arequipa.

Peru experiences frequent earthquakes as it lies along the Pacific “Ring of Fire”, a zone known for intense seismic activity.

A magnitude 7.9 earthquake that struck the Ica region in 2007 killed nearly 600 people.
