NEW DELHI: Former skipper Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow put on a magnificent partnership, in a crucial match to level the Ashes series at 2-2, driving England towards a commanding position in the fifth and final Test at The Oval in London on Saturday.

At stumps on the third day, England stood at an imposing 389-9 in their second innings, holding a commanding lead of 377 runs against Australia.
