5 ways to create a maximalist bathroom for an eclectic look that remains functional

Maximalist bathroom decor ideas.

Maximalist decor is all about embracing a layered approach; mixing color, pattern, and styles. When adopted in the bathroom, you can create a characterful and design-led space.

While bathrooms more typically favor neutral colors and modern, sleek fixtures, opting instead for a maximal scheme creates a space that doesn't feel at all bland or sterile, but one that's full of personality.

'Maximalist bathrooms exude vibrancy with their kaleidoscope of colors, intricate patterns, and an eclectic fusion of textures,' says interior designer Jennifer Davis. 'Think walls adorned with captivating wallpapers, with bold patterns such as a lively floral or striking geometric.'

5 maximalist bathroom ideas

Below, we've rounded up five different home decor ideas to help you embrace decorating with maximalism in the bathroom. Whether you're looking to do a full remodel or instead make some smaller changes, these ideas will help you create a bathroom that is bold, playful, and uplifting.

1. Opt for bold wall colors

For a maximalist bathroom, embrace decorating with saturated color trends in place of decorating with neutrals. Painting the walls in a bold color will instantly set the tone of your maximalist bathroom and add drama.

'Step away from muted tones and embrace a rich and diverse color palette,' advises Niko Rasides, Design Director at Nicholas Anthony. 'Jewel tones like emerald green, royal blue, and deep burgundy can add a touch of regal elegance. Mix and match colors, using vibrant hues to create a visually stimulating environment. Consider painting the ceiling for an unexpected burst of color that draws the eye upward.'

If you have a small bathroom, making a statement with bold bathroom color ideas can be just as effective: 'I’ve always been a fan of small rooms such as bathrooms being painted in bold colors such as yellow, it is instant indoor vitamin D to lift the spirits and brighten your mood,' says interior designer Matthew Williamson

2. Decorate with pattern

'Maximalism thrives on bold patterns and vibrant prints,' says Niko. 'Consider adorning your bathroom walls with eye-catching wallpaper or intricate tiles that command attention. Select large florals, geometric shapes, or elaborate patterns that set the tone for a space that's as dynamic as it is luxurious.'

Matthew also recommends embracing patterns to create a maximalist-style bathroom, which you can do by opting for statement wall and floor tile ideas, and for maximum impact, add a secondary print with wallpaper ideas. 'Patterned tiles in bright and beautiful colors are a must, and to achieve a more accomplished look, don’t be afraid to include more than one print through wallpaper, towels, or even furniture.'

3. Add opulent fixtures

Another way to create a maximalist-style bathroom is to consider upgrading fixtures to reflect a vintage-inspired look. Fixtures such as the bath can be a great way of adding interesting details, rather than the clean lines associated with modern fixtures. 'Swap out standard taps and handles for ornate, metallic finishes like bronze or brass,' suggests Niko. 'Choose statement pieces like a freestanding bathtub with intricate claw feet or an intricately designed vanity. These luxurious touches elevate the overall aesthetic of the bathroom.'

4. Make a statement with lighting

'Lighting plays a big role in maximalist design,' says Jennifer. It's important not to overlook lighting when designing your maximalist bathroom. You should aim to use your bathroom lighting ideas as a way to create an eclectic look by layering different styles, adding further interest to the whole room.

'Opt for ornate chandeliers, pendants with intricate detailing, or vintage sconces, each infusing a touch of glamour. Fixtures adorned with colorful glass or crystal accents, scattering vibrant reflections across the expanse, elevating the overall ambiance,' continues Jennifer.

5. Layer accessories

Adding plenty of accessories to your maximalist bathroom is key to finishing the look. While a bathroom needs to keep practicality at the forefront, adding accessories that serve a purpose can be a great way to experiment with layering even more color and texture.

'Gilded mirrors nestled in elaborate frames, decorative trays showcasing a trove of perfume bottles or jewelry, and clusters of candles in varying sizes infuse an air of opulence,' says Jennifer. 'Introduce metallic accents through gold or brass trays, vases, and ornamental containers.'

While layering lots of different design elements is key to achieving a maximal scheme, it is also important to retain some level of balance, to ensure the space looks considered and is livable. 'I like to even out the vibrancy of my bathroom color palette with soft, calming neutrals such as pale pinks and grey greens,' says Matthew. 'For me, these colors are the equivalent of white, grey, and beige – they provide a soothing effect without ever being bland or characterless'
