Significant news this afternoon when multiple reports revealed that San Fransisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk was reporting to training camp.
Aiyuk has been the object of affection for Pittsburgh Steelers fans this offseason. Many agree the team should be more in desperation mode with their undesirable corps of wide receivers.
Could a trade still happen despite the fourth-year veteran attending camp? Sure. But there are 17 weeks between now and the deadline, which has been extended by a week this offseason (from Oct. 31 to Nov. 5).
The Niners might as well sit on their hands and wait for a sweet offer from a playoff contender seeking to add a weapon.
This wouldn’t bode well for the Steelers, of course, as without a surefire top receiver, it’s tough to see Pittsburgh being in that position come Week 10.
Omar Khan and company should’ve done whatever it took to acquire a No. 1A or No. 1B receiver this offseason, and they could suffer the consequences this season.
We should probably trust that Arthur Smith has a trick or two up his sleeve when it comes to the pigskin delegation.
But if Aiyuk gets traded this season and ends up with a division rival—say the Cleveland Browns—Steelers Nation will be up in arms.
