The 49ers on Monday announced they are bringing back veteran cornerback Jason Verrett on a one-year deal.
Verrett has been with the 49ers for the last three seasons and missed all of last season after tearing his ACL in the season opener in Detroit. It was the second time in three years he suffered a season-ending knee injury with the 49ers.
Injuries have come to define the former first-round pick’s career. He played just six games in 2014 as a rookie, then earned a Pro Bowl nod in 2015 while playing in 14 games. After that he accumulated just six games over the next four seasons including that 2019 campaign in San Francisco.
2020 showed what Verrett can be when he’s healthy though. He was excellent in 13 games for San Francisco and played well enough to earn another one-year deal for 2021. He entered last season as one of the two starting outside corners before hurting his knee.
He joins a now crowded CB room that features Charvarius Ward, Emmanuel Moseley, Ambry Thomas and a slew of others including two 2022 draft picks. If he’s healthy he’s one of their best cornerbacks and could find his way back onto the field.
