49ers GM John Lynch, head coach Kyle Shanahan sign multi-year extensions

The 49ers on Friday announced the signing of head coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch to multi-year extensions.

No parameters for the deals were announced but it’s likely the deals will put the GM and head coach, who have been together since they were hired in 2017, on the same contract length.

Shanahan was signed through 2025 and Lynch’s deal was due to end after next season.

San Francisco is off to a strong start in 2023 after a second consecutive NFC championship game appearance last season.

After instability in the 2014, 2015 and 2016 seasons, team CEO Jed York has found a formula of head coach and GM that works and has success.

Lynch has helped run a front office that’s constructed one of the best rosters in the NFL. Shanahan’s teams struggled out of the gate in 2017 and 2018, but he’s now 55-46 as a head coach including 45-24 over the last four-plus seasons. The team has also been on deep playoff runs in three out of the last four years and Shanahan is 6-3 overall in the postseason.
