4 things a Chase Claypool trade would mean for the Steelers

The NFL world is abuzz with rumors about which players are being shopped and which could be in the coming weeks. The name most often associated with a potential trade when it comes to the Pittsburgh Steelers is wide receiver Chase Claypool. We are on board with a trade of Claypool if there’s value there for sure but here is what that move would mean for the Steelers.

George Pickens moves outside

Most of rookie wide receiver George Pickens’ snaps this season have come in the slot. Pickens was great playing the boundary in college and so it isn’t likely the move would hurt his production in any way.

A veteran addition in the slot?

Pittsburgh has options for who would replace Pickens in the slot. Miles Boykin is an interesting guy with his size but it could come down to a smaller, quicker guy like Steven Sims or Calvin Austin III. If not, I wouldn’t be shocked if Pittsburgh added a veteran with experience lining up inside.

Brings the tight end into the fold more

Removing Claypool from the lineup puts a spotlight on the tight end position where the Steelers can also create size mismatches. Pat Freiermuth and Zach Gentry are both huge targets and could replace some of Claypool’s routes.

Hurts Mitch Trubisky more than Kenny PIckett

In terms of player chemistry and distribution of labor, trading away Claypool would impact Mitch Trubisky more than Kenny Pickett. This is significant with what could be a revolving door at quarterback if the Steelers keep opting for the hot hand or more injuries happen.
