Many Americans have been on a protein kick lately, especially in light of the government’s new “upside-down” food pyramid that recommends eating proteins, fruits and vegetables in bulk compared with whole grains. Science shows that increasing protein in your diet has a ton of benefits, including increasing satiety, reducing cravings and boosting fat loss while maintaining muscle. Studies also show that eating enough protein may improve bone health, according to Healthline.

Find Out: How Much Groceries Cost Americans 10 Years Ago vs. Today
But with the price of red meat rising, it can be hard to fill your plate without draining your budget. Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. recently suggested people choose “liver or the cheaper cuts of steak,” which he deemed “very, very affordable.”
Here are three wallet-friendly proteins that are cheaper than liver — and taste better.
Also see four simple ways to save on your grocery bill every month.
How Cheap Is Liver?
Liver ranges from roughly $2.50 to $4 per pound. Pleasant View Farms in Connecticut has beef liver for $4 per pound, while the grocery store Shop Rite lists liver on Instacart for $3.39 per pound. Walmart sells prepackaged liver from $2.82 per pound to $3.68 per pound.
You’ll pay more, though, for grass-fed. White Oak Pastures in Georgia has grass-fed beef liver for $12.99 per pound, originally $16.99.
Whether you choose grass-fed or regular beef liver, you may be able to find other protein sources for less money.

Canned Tuna Offers Convenience
Find canned chunk light tuna in water for less than $1 a can at discount grocers like Lidl. A 5-ounce serving can have as many as 35 grams of protein and only 140 calories, according to American Tuna, making it a clear winner.
Chicken Legs and Thighs May Be Cheaper on Sale
Chicken legs (drumsticks) and thighs are comparable in price to liver and may be even cheaper on sale. Walmart lists boneless, skinless thighs at $3.72 per pound, while a value pack of drumsticks is on sale for $1.04 per pound.
Of course, organic poultry will cost you more at the grocery store.
Eggs Are Still Cheaper Than Most Meats and Poultry
In spite of inflation and Avian flu driving the price of eggs up, they remain an affordable source of protein. In January 2026, eggs averaged $3.59 per dozen across the U.S., according to SoFi, or roughly 30 cents per egg.
The appeal of eggs is their versatility and great taste — eat them hard-boiled, fried or scrambled. Add a side of cottage cheese and fruit for a healthy, protein-packed breakfast.
